While large, established gear-makers try to figure out ways to retrofit their high-volume operations for less environmental impact, a number of small, upstart brands are starting with a blank sheet of paper and developing green products and processes from the get-go. Atayne is one such upstart.
The Grind T fabric is 100% recycled polyester from post consumer plastic bottles, treated with naturally-derived Chitosan. The environmental benefit of using recycled polyester is probably pretty self-evident, but the role of Chitosan perhaps deserves a bit more explanation. Chitosan is made from the crushed shells of critters like crabs, lobsters, and shrimps. See, it turns out the exoskeletons of crustaceans are comprised primarily of a substance called chitin, which is a naturally occurring polymer with excellent antibacterial properties (read: stink management). As a natural product, Chitosan is also completely biodegradable and unlikely to trigger an allergic or other adverse biological reaction (even, believe it or not, for those among us with shellfish allergies).
Of course, considerable care was also taken in the application of the “POV” (point of view) graphics: Atayne uses only water-based or phthalate-free inks.
And, by the way, their production process is based in North America to reduce their transportation impact and ensure high labor standards. So that’s the slightly expanded explanation of Atayne’s saying that the Grind T is trash turned into treasure.
The Men's Grind T is plenty long and has a fairly loose, casual cut. Size down one size if you prefer a more fitted cut. Crew neck.
You are encouraged to wear your Grind T several times between washings. Just rinse it out and hang it by its loop; it’ll be as fresh as a daisy in time for your next outing.
