As mentioned yesterday, one of our primary uses of Twitter will be to broadcast special deals on closeout items. For fun, we’ve decided to handle these items in roughly the style of a Dutch Auction. Here’s how it will work:
1. We will announce via Twitter the opening offer: the item(s), price and any other details.
2. If the item doesn’t sell, we’ll lower the price.
3. We will repeat step two until the item sells.
To give an example, let’s stick with the first item we’re handling this way — our last GoLite Rush pack. Yesterday, the pack was being offered for $35 (50% off MSRP) and included a complementary 100 oz Camelback reservoir ($30 MSRP). It didn’t sell, so last night we announced via Twitter that we would lower today’s price for the pack/reservoir combo by$5 to $30. If it doesn’t sell today, we’ll announce tomorrow’s price this evening on Twitter. Once it sells, we’ll move on to another item.
In case it isn’t obvious, the fun we referenced above is in weighing the possibility of snagging an item at a lower price versus the possibility of missing out on an item entirely.
