Product Description
Your first question about this shoe may come down to one word: Oboz? In the reasonable event that the name is new to you, a little background is in order. Oboz was started last year by John Connelly, an outdoor footwear industry veteran with experience at companies like Montrail. John and his team are interested in creating great shoes on their own terms. As in, no corporate BS. Their company name derives from the nickname of their stomping grounds Outside BOZeman, Montana.
The first generation Ignition, launched at last summer’s Outdoor Retailer show, received nearly unanimous positive reviews, including being called Rookie of the Year by Outside Magazine in their Winter 2009 gear review. Click here for another third party review, this one by SNEWS. Not content to rest on a successful debut, Oboz immediately set about refining the shoe. The Ignition II is the result of that effort.
The most distinctive design feature of the Ignition is its upper, which consists of a stretchy mesh bootie and floating forefoot lace cage. The lightly padded bootie wraps your foot in a soft hug and keeps out debris. The lace cage keeps your foot from wandering. The combination is an innovative approach that makes for an appealing, comfortable fit. The Ignition also features an external heel clip to further improve fit.
If you are already familiar with the first generation Ignition, you may know that one consistent complaint was that the ankle opening on the bootie was too small, which made it a bit of chore to put on the shoe. Oboz has relaxed the opening on the new model just enough to solve this problem without losing the snug fit that people loved about the first model.
The midsole is a straightforward 3 part EVA construction, which provides nice cushion at a low weight. The outsole is as tough as you want it to be, with deep, aggressive lugs that work well in nearly all conditions but really shine in loose dirt. Inside the shoe you will find a tri-density footbed, which is a nice, premium touch.
In terms of application, the Ignition is an all-rounder that excels under most trail conditions. It is sufficiently sturdy and armored to easily see you through long, tough days, but is a surprisingly light shoe. With the Ignition, Oboz absolutely deserves a place in the conversation with the other respected trail-specific running shoe companies.
